Post-hypnotic suggestion
What is a post-hypnotic suggestion?
A post-hypnotic suggestion is an instruction given under hypnosis that can be utilized later whenever the subject is not in hypnosis. I use post hypnotic suggestions for many purposes. For controlling physical discomfort, for example, I can give a subject an instruction under hypnosis which he can then use when he is not in hypnosis to control the physical discomfort that he may be feeling at some later occasion. So he doesn’t need to be hypnotised every time he has a physical discomfort in order to be able to control it. He can use the post-hypnotic suggestion any time he needs to use it.
I tell the subject under hypnosis that I am giving him a post-hypnotic suggestion, I then give the suggestion, and then I go over the post hypnotic suggestion with him once he is out of hypnosis. And I verify that he knows how to use it. This implants the post-hypnotic suggestion firmly into his subconscious mind. As soon as he sees that the post-hypnotic suggestion actually works when he tries it, this makes the post-hypnotic suggestion work even better. It acts as a kind of useful hypnosis tool kit, so to speak, that I equip the subject for use with whenever he needs it.
Another good example of this is in getting rid of bad habits. Under hypnosis I can give the subject a post-hypnotic suggestion to use whenever he may feel the urge to satisfy the habit. With the post-hypnotic suggestion implanted into his subconscious he can then quell the urge to “feed” the habit. Within a short period of time the habit then dies away.
